Adaptive Sports and Adventures Program

The Adaptive Sports and Adventure Program (ASAP) addresses the functional and therapeutic needs of patients through sports, recreation and outdoor adventures.

ASAP's vision integrates patients in ongoing community events and programming. The program allows physically challenged youth and adults to develop their leisure skills while enhancing an active and productive lifestyle.

Team sports occur once a week in season:

  • wheelchair rugby
  • wheelchair basketball
  • Gary Workman tennis
  • power soccer
  • track and field

Outdoor adventures take advantage of North Carolinas' tremendous outdoor potential. Trips include:

  • water skiing
  • sailing
  • kayaking
  • snow skiing
  • handcycling

Winners on Wheels Scout Troop
Winners on Wheels is a national organization where kids with mobility impairments work on various badges and projects. The group empowers children in wheelchairs by challenging them to confidently contribute to their community.

ASAP's Winners on Wheels group meets every other week throughout the school year and attends various year-round events. (For ages five to 12.)

Educational and Awareness Clinics
Monthly outreach programs for school systems reach all kinds of youth to show the unique recreational needs of physically challenged kids. Local wheelchair athletes also display their skills and the latest technology that allows them to be active. The clinic encourages participation and open discussion of adaptive sports.

Funding Support
ASAP sponsors year-round fundraising projects to help offset costs, purchase sports equipment, keep fees low, and give scholarships to those in need. The annual "Cycle to the Sea" event is one of the ways ASAP raises funds, along with car washes, employee cookouts, raffles and school exhibition games. The program also relies on generous individuals and corporations who believe in empowering those with physical limitations.

Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers include patients, family, friends, and physically challenged athletes who serve as great role models. These mentors volunteer their time to help physically limited children understand that they can be active and enjoy life to the fullest.

For more informaton about ASAP programs or to become a volunteer please call 704-355-1062 or email ASAP.
