MedCenter Air traces its roots to May 1986 with one single-engine Bell 206 Longranger helicopter, eight medical crew, three pilots and one mechanic. The helicopter's base was on the front lawn of Carolinas Medical Center. Although many things have changed, our goal remains unchanged: to provide the community with an extension of services provided by Carolinas Medical Center, rapid transport to the most appropriate hospital, and to be a secondary responder for EMS in our region.
With the values of safety and quality care, MedCenter Air quickly grew to meet regional demands with the purchase of a 1987 Beechcraft Super King Air 200. In 1991, MedCenter Air purchased its first critical care ground unit. In 1995, MedCenter Air started to provide jet service.
Today, MedCenter Air's fleet includes two Bell 430 and one Bell 230 helicopters, two Beechcraft Super King Air 200 twin turboprop airplanes, two Cessna Citation 560 jets airplane and critical care ground ambulances.
MedCenter Air continues to grow to meet our region's needs. Our transport volume has increased from 30 per month our first year to our current average of almost 600 transports per month. MedCenter Air staff include over 90 medical crew, 25 helicopter and airplane pilots, nine mechanics and 10 communication specialists.
Our reach has even expanded nationally and internationally, having transported to nearly every continent around the globe. Political dignitaries, celebrities and professional athletes have all trusted the team at MedCenter Air for their medical transport needs.
