Liver Transplants

The Liver Transplant Program at the Carolinas Center for Liver Diseases surgeons

In 2009, the CMC Liver Transplant Program posted the Highest Percentage of First-Year Survival Rates in North Carolina, according to the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients. In addition, CMC Liver Transplant Program led the state, performing more transplant surgeries than either UNC Hospitals or Duke University Medical Center, and posted better outcomes one year post-transplantation.

Our Liver Transplant Program is second to none in North Carolina, and is a leading program in the Southeast.

Procedures performed in 2009 # of Liver Transplants First-year Survival Rate One-year Graft Survival
CMC 64 90.02 88.35
UNC Hospitals 40 83.64 81.76
Duke University Medical Center 57 78.57 70.57

In 2009, CMC performed 64 liver transplants, more than doubling the number of surgeries we performed in 2006 when the total was 26. CMC performed the greatest number of transplants in North Carolina compared to Duke's 57 and UNC's 40 liver transplants.

Since launching our liver transplant program in 1994 through December 2009, our physicians have performed more than 500 liver transplants.

Our medical staff includes experienced liver transplant surgeons and hepatologists from leading transplant centers across the country. CMC's liver transplant surgeons bring more than 40 years of cumulative experience and have performed deceased donor, pediatric, split liver and donor after cardiac death liver transplants.
