Overview
The Department of Emergency Medicine offers a two-year ACGME-certified medical toxicology training program. Graduates of emergency medicine, pediatrics, preventive medicine, internal medicine or family medicine training programs are eligible. The training experience encompasses all facets of medical toxicology including:
- Acute care adult and pediatric consultation
- Occupational and environmental exposures
- HBO
- Poison Center direction
- Basic and/or clinical research
- Grant writing
- Didactics (including regular journal club, case conference, text review and special topic review)
- Preparation of lectures for departments within Carolinas Medical Center
- Manuscript preparation (case reports, text chapters, research)
- Instruction of rotating residents, medical students and PharmD students
- Presentation of research at national meetings.
The development of the fellowship occurs in two phases. In the first year, emphasis is placed on clinical experience through patient encounters and the Carolinas Poison Center. Research (either clinical or basic science) is the primary focus during the second year. Didactic teaching is integral throughout both years of training.
