The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 12,000 Americans will be diagnosed with cancers of the bone and soft tissue this year.
Soft tissue sarcomas are cancerous tumors that can develop in fat, muscle, nerve, fibrous tissues surrounding joints, blood vessel or deep skin tissues in any part of the body. About half of sarcomas develop in the arms or legs. The rest begin in the trunk, head and neck area, internal organs or the back of the abdominal cavity.
Noncancerous (benign) bone tumors are more common than cancerous tumors. Both types may grow and compress or absorb healthy bone tissue, replacing it with abnormal tissue. Primary bone cancer is a rare form of cancer that originates in the bone. Around 2,500 new cases of primary bone cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. Secondary bone cancer is more common and occurs when cancer spreads to the bone from another organ, such as the lungs, prostate or breast.
Our Program Effective treatment of bone and soft tissue cancers is complex. Our program utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach to provide each patient with the optimal diagnostic, treatment and evaluation options available. Since its inception in 1992, the Musculoskeletal Tumor Program at Blumenthal Cancer Center has become the regional leader for state-of-the-art musculoskeletal cancer treatment.
