Many patients who have received treatment to
cure or control cancer have suffered significant physical, emotional and
psychological effects. To help individuals and their families learn to
adapt to the effects of cancer and cancer treatment, Blumenthal Cancer Center at
Carolinas Medical Center hosts a Cancer Rehabilitation Program.
Typical areas affected by cancer
and cancer treatment include mobility, self-care, emotional well-being,
spirituality, vocational pursuits and social interactions. The goals of
rehabilitation are to overcome adverse effects and regain maximum independence.
Patient/family education and support services are provided on a continual basis.
Family therapy, which is focused on helping family members cope with a loved
one's medical condition, is an integral part of the program.

Certain cancer treatment may cause
a swelling in the lymphatic system known as lymphedema. This swelling is caused
by an accumulation of protein-rich fluid. This condition can be treated with
various pressure and exercise techniques.
