Gastrointestinal Cancer

The gastrointestinal system is made up of the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, gallbladder, liver, pancreas, rectum and anus. The last six feet of the large intestines is called the colon, and the last six inches of the colon is the rectum. The majority of gastrointestinal cancers are in the colon and rectum, and may be referred to as colorectal cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 100,800 cases will occur in 2010. Colorectal cancers are the third most common cancers in men and women living in the United States.

Blumenthal Cancer Center's new Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancer Clinic offers comprehensive, multidisciplinary care to patients with stomach and intestinal (gastrointestinal) cancers, including cancers of the colon and rectum, anus, appendix, bile duct, esophagus, gallbladder, liver, and pancreas, as well as gastrointestinal carcinoid tumors and gastrointestinal stroma tumors (GIST).

The GI Clinic was created to consolidate the spectrum of services needed for quality GI cancer care into one central location. This multidisciplinary approach allows our team of medical and surgical oncologists, dedicated nursing staff, support counselor and oncology dietitian to review every case collectively to provide each patient with a treatment plan tailored to their unique needs.

The Gastrointestinal Cancer Clinic at Blumenthal Cancer Center is at the forefront of cancer care discoveries and our patients are among the first to benefit, having unique access to exceptional care and clinical trial opportunities.
