The American Cancer Society estimates there will be 204,990 new cases of lung cancer in the United States this year. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in America.
What is Lung Cancer? The protective lining around the lungs is called the pleura. The windpipe brings air down into the lungs, dividing into tubes called bronchi.
Most lung cancers start in the lining of the bronchi and take many years to develop. Often, lung cancer begins with pre-cancerous changes in the lung that cause no symptoms and cannot be seen on an X-ray.
As these pre-cancerous developments become true cancer, they may cause new blood vessels to form nearby. These new blood vessels nourish the cancer cells and promote the formation of a tumor, which eventually becomes large enough to be seen on an X-ray.
