Molecular Biology

The Molecular Biology Core Facility is located on the second floor of the Cannon Research Center on the Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) campus. This facility is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, including:

  • CCD cameras
  • LS-3000 Fuji imager
  • Phosphoimager BAS 1500
  • ABI 310 DNA sequencer
  • ABI Prism 7000 real time PCR machine

The Molecular Core staff consists of an MD/PhD Medical Director, PhD Molecular Geneticist Manager, five experienced technicians, and two PhD collaborators.

Our facility provides services such as nucleic acid extraction, microarray sample preparation, cloning and sequencing, PCR, RT-PCR and real time PCR, Northern, and Western blotting techniques. The facility also hosts related projects of CMC residents, OB/GYN Research, Pediatric Genetics Research, and Urology Research.

The endocrinology and gynecological oncology divisions of OB/GYN have been involved with several studies in the field of endometrial and ovarian cancer in collaboration with the Molecular Biology Core Facility. Several publications have resulted from these studies and have lead to the establishment of women's health research endowments from local sources.

Pediatric Genetics Research involves studies in the field of human genetics, particularly Angelman syndrome and Prader-Willi Syndrome, and has resulted in some major publications. McKay Urology utilizes the facility for their prostate cancer related studies. Their activities have also produced several publications.

The state-of-the art Affymetrix  Microarray Core Facility serves as part of the Genomic Consortium of Charlotte and is affiliated with the Molecular Biology Core Facility. The Mass Spectrometry Facility serves as the Proteomic Consortium of Charlotte and is also a part of the Molecular Biology Core Facility. This facility will be managed by a PhD Mass Spectrometry Specialist. The Molecular Biology Core Facility has collaborated closely with UNC-Charlotte faculty and students in the past few years.
