Welcome to the webpage of the Department or Internal Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. We are thrilled that you have decided to visit with us, and that you have chosen a career in Internal Medicine. We hope our site addresses every question you have.
Mission Statement Our mission is t o provide an excellent inpatient and ambulatory internal medicine training experience. With our balance of autonomy, inpatient care, one-on-one faculty/resident teaching and excellent espirit-de-corps, we hope to provide an ideal environment where you will thrive.
Whether your future includes a subspecialty fellowship, general internal medicine, or a career as a hospitalist, our program provides you with the individual attention and support you need to get there. One of the unique aspects of our program is that we will start your career counseling before you even arrive, and individualize your residency experience to help you get to the career pathway you desire.
Our 36 residents come from all over the country and represent 23 outstanding U.S. medical schools. We offer the following positions in the NRMP:
- 10 categorical positions / year
- Six preliminary positions / year
- Optional fourth year as Chief Resident
Our house officers are experienced in the management of acutely ill, multi-system
afflicted patients common in urban centers, as well as those patients typically referred to tertiary institutions for their "esoteric" diseases. As the main flagship hospital of the third largest not-for-profit health care system in the United States, we are a main referral center for critically ill patients in the Metrolina region of North Carolina, which encompasses close to 2 million people. Because we also serve as the main hospital for Mecklenburg County, we also see a large number of acutely ill patients from the city's urban population.
Each house officer, no matter what PGY level, is given as much responsibility as he or she can handle. Full-time faculty backup is also available for prompt consultation. Key features of our program include:
We also strive to maintain a balance between our professional and personal lives. We feel very strongly that house officers that are fulfilled in their professional career will be better suited to enjoy all that life outside the hospital has to offer. Your future life will be all about career/life balances - so we start educating you in the process during your training.
- On average, interns have five months per year on our consult and elective services without call.
- On average, upper levels have six to seven months per year without call.
Of course there will be busy times; but we feel strongly that they will be well balanced by periods when you have the time to read, spend time with your family and friends, and enjoy Charlotte and all it has to offer!
