Message from the Residency Director

Vanessa McPherson, MD

Welcome to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC!

It is my pleasure to introduce you to our Elizabeth Family Medicine Residency program. We are a very well-established program, dating back to the early 1970s when family medicine first became a specialty, and are fully-accredited by the ACGME. While there are many excellent residency programs in our state and region, what distinguishes Carolinas Medical Center is that we offer the best of both worlds: a strong academic environment in a thriving community-based program. Additionally, with the location of our inpatient service at CMC-Mercy, residents experience the benefits of both "opposed" and "unopposed" settings. Our faculty is outstanding and very approachable, with expertise that runs the full scope of family medicine. Our residents and faculty enjoy supportive, collegial relationships with our peers in other specialties both in the hospital and beyond.

Please take time to explore our website, view our videos, and learn more about our program and community. There are a few initiatives that I would like to highlight for you:

  • We have implemented an innovative Integrative Medicine Curriculum. Carolinas Medical Center is one of only eight pilot programs in the country currently offering this curriculum which spans the three years of residency. The Integrative Medicine Curriculum covers everything from self-care and wellness, to botanicals and CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) treatment modalities, with an emphasis on integrating it all with traditional medical therapies.
  • We are actively involved Continuous Quality Improvement and our family medicine center has received recognition from the NCQA (National Committee on Quality Assurance) for Diabetes Care and the Medical Home (which relates to patient-centeredness and access to care). All of our residents receive experience in population-based disease management, the team-based approach to patient care, and how to maximize outcomes for their patients.
  • Other areas of strength our program offers include procedural training, evidence-based medicine, community and occupational medicine, geriatrics, sports/musculoskeletal medicine, and pediatric/adolescent medicine.

I would encourage you to contact our residents to get a feel for what it is like to work and live in the Charlotte area. On this site, you will find information on our faculty, curriculum, residents' salary and benefits as well as general information on the Charlotte area. Please contact us if you have any questions about the program or the application process.

Thank you again for your interest in our program and best wishes to you as you strive to make this important decision and transition into the next phase of your professional life. I hope to see you soon!

Sincerely,

Vanessa McPherson, MD
