Life After Residency: Fellowships and Private Practice
Firstly, we are thrilled to announce that we have been approved by the ACGME [Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education] for a GASTROENTEROLOGY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM!
We hope to be a part of the NRMP [National Resident Matching Program] in 2009-2010, with our first fellows through the Match to start in July 2011!
Despite the technical label of 'community' hospital - which means there is no medical school physically in Charlotte -our residents have a very broad-based educational/patient exposure identical to the majority of 'University' programs.
One myth we would like to debunk is that you will have difficulty obtaining a fellowship if you come here for residency. On average, 30 to 40 percent of our residents enter fellowship training after completing their residency. Our residents have entered everything from Gastroenterology and Cardiology to Rheumatology and Hematology-Oncology.

The number of residents entering fellowships fluctuates from year to year but averages about 30 to 40 percent. Our class of 2009 class has 4 of 10 residents entering fellowship.
View the career paths of our residents from 1999 to 2009.

Overall, our residents' career options have been boundless. An interesting phenomenon that we have seen is that our residents often choose to stay in our region. Charlotte continues to grow by leaps and bounds. Indeed, growth in the Charlotte region has outpaced that of most U.S. cities. Here, you'll find a diverse community with metropolitan amenities in a smaller town environment. Because of the high quality of life here, many have chosen to enter General Internal Medicine in the Charlotte community, both in outpatient practices and as hospitalists.
