PGY-1 Year

The first post-graduate year in obstetrics and gynecology contains five months of obstetrics, two months of internal medicine, one month of emergency medicine, two months of gynecologic oncology, one month of general surgery and one month of ultrasound/clinical genetics.

This first year is designed to offer residents a diversified experience in each of the above disciplines which will best prepare the resident to pursue a post-graduate career in obstetrics and gynecology.

The five-month rotation on obstetrics and gynecology provides the resident with first-hand experience in the care of the normal and high-risk obstetric patient under the supervision of the housestaff and full-time staff of the department. Two months during this year is an introduction to surgical techniques and management of surgical patients. One month will be on the general surgery service and one month on the gynecologic oncology service.

Instruction in the management of common medical conditions occurs during four months in the first year. Two months of instruction occurs in the department of internal medicine and one month is spent in the emergency department. Direct supervision is provided by senior housestaff and attending faculty from the department of internal medicine and the department of emergency medicine.

An introduction to antenatal ultrasound/genetics occurs in a one-month rotation. Residents will be involved with the clinical genetics program. Residents are introduced to the techniques of ultrasound and clinical genetics under the direct supervision of the division of maternal-fetal medicine faculty.
