Overview of Carolinas HealthCare System
Clinical Services: Carolinas HealthCare System (CHS) is the largest healthcare system in the Carolinas, and the third largest public system in the nation. CHS owns, leases, or manages 29 hospitals in North and South Carolina. Carolinas Medical Center (CMC-Main) is flagship facility of CHS. It is an 874-bed hospital. A full range of adult and pediatric services are provided both at CMC-Main/Levine Children's Hospital. A 103-bed rehabilitation hospital is also located on the CMC-Main campus. CMC-Main serves as the Level-I trauma center for western North Carolina as well as a large section of upstate South Carolina. The patient population includes a mix of public and private insurance, with approximately 85 percent covered by Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance. CHS provides over $770 million annually in community indigent care, uncompensated medical services, and other programs.
Education: In addition to the orthopaedics program, CHS participates in residency education programs for over 250 additional residents, in 18 specialties including emergency medicine, general surgery, internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and PM&R. There are also fellowship training programs offered in several specialties. An association between CHS and the University of North Carolina allows UNC medical students the option to complete several third and fourth year rotations at CMC-Main/Levine Children's Hospital.
