Overview The orthopaedic residency at Carolinas Medical Center is one of the most comprehensive and widely respected programs in the country. The goal has always been to graduate well rounded, highly competent orthopaedic surgeons. The residents get to work with board certified, fellowship-trained specialists from all sub-specialties of orthopaedics in a one on one fashion. The program's educational philosophy is that the best environment for learning clinical medicine is achieved with one patient, one attending and one resident. Our educational goals are listed below:
- To strive for excellence in patient care
- To provide a diverse and meaningful selection of clinical conferences and lectures
- To stimulate interest in clinical and basic science research
The Carolinas Medical Center offers such a large clinical volume that less than half of the orthopaedic cases are covered by residents.
Three residents are admitted annually through a highly selective process administered through the NRMP. We currently use ERAS exclusively for the upcoming application process. The orthopaedic residency consists of four full clinical years and one internship year at CMC. In addition, fellowships are offered in specific areas where a critical mass of personal and educational material exists, thus avoiding a negative impact on the residency. As residents progress through the program, they will assume greater responsibility for patient care in the operating room as well as during pre-operative and post-operative evaluations. Along with these duties, residents take an active role in the education of medical students rotating through the orthopaedic services, and in the education of junior residents. Over the residency training period, experience and responsibility are gradually increased so that at the end of the program each resident is comfortable and competent in all subspecialty areas of orthopaedic surgery.
