Inpatient Experiences

Our Level-1 Trauma Center provides tertiary care to North Carolina, southern Virginia, northern South Carolina and western Tennessee. Drawing from a broad geographic area results in a diverse inpatient population and a wide range of diagnostic groups and disease states. Extensive inpatient experiences include subspecialty experiences such as SCI, TBI, CVA, Amputee, Pediatrics, Oncology and Orthopedics.

Outpatient Experience
The resident outpatient experience includes outpatient clinics at Carolinas Rehabilitation and private practice offices within the community. Most "off-campus" practice sites are just a short drive from Carolinas Rehabilitation.

Electrodiagnostic Medicine

Electrodiagnostic medicine (EMG) is an essential part of our residency program's broad based-training. Electrodiagnostic procedures are performed in numerous settings. On average, a resident will perform over 200 procedures. Six months of training is allotted for pure electrodiagnosis. Residents also gain experience with these procedures during their other rotations and elective time. Resident involvement in the procedures is based on the resident's level of experience and knowledge base. All PGY-2's are teamed up with a more senior resident for EMG rotations. A diverse faculty and a variety of settings provide for a well-rounded approach and exposure to a broad spectrum of patient and diagnostic categories. Full and part-time time faculty, Carolinas Rehabilitation physiatrists, CMC Neurologists and private practitioners participate in the EMG teaching program. Many of our physiatrists and neurologists are board certified by the American Board of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (ABNEM)

Interventional Procedures

From trigger point injections to epidural steroid spinal injections, our resident staff is exposed to all aspects of interventional physiatric procedures in every imaginable clinic setting. As a result of the experience obtained within our residency programs, many PM&R residents have chosen to sub-specialize in musculoskeletal and pain medicine and further their education via national and local fellowships.
