More than half of all childhood deaths in the U.S. are trauma related. Trauma claims more children’s lives than all other diseases combined. Every year, some 15,000 children die and another 100,000 are permanently disabled.
To improve trauma care for children, The Hemby Pediatric Trauma Institute and Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) have created a regional system combining transportation, treatment and rehabilitation for pediatric trauma victims. The services of the Hemby Pediatric Trauma Institute are available to healthcare providers and patients throughout the Carolinas 24 hours a day.
Our facilities include a specialized Emergency Department with five resuscitation areas, a designated trauma care unit, and all the necessary specialized staff to assess, diagnose, and treat life-threatening injuries. Additional services are available such as:
- Trauma Surgery
- Emergency Medicine
- Pediatric Critical Care
- Neurosurgery
- Orthopaedic Surgery
- Plastic Surgery
- Pediatric Surgery
- Pediatric Rehabilitation
- Radiology
- Anesthesiology
Should rapid transfer to CMC’s Level One Trauma Center prove necessary, MedCenter Air's helicopter or critical care ground vehicle are always available. The critical care transport service is staffed around the clock by healthcare professionals with advanced training in trauma, critical care and flight physiology. The transport crew is in contact with CMC physicians at all times. The transport vehicles have advanced monitoring equipment, so any changes in a patient's condition can be monitored and a qualified trauma personnel can respond while en route.
