Injury is the leading cause of death among Americans aged one to
44. Because injuries disproportionately affect the young, there is no
greater cause for loss of productive years. Long considered "accidents," today
we know that—like diseases—injuries follow patterns. We study these trends to
learn to better prevent them.
Carolinas Medical Center strives to prevent injury, disability and death,
and the costs associated with injury. Our efforts, independently and in
collaboration with others, include research, education, program development,
implementation and evaluation, and public policy advocacy.

Center For Injury Prevention
Carolinas
Center for Injury Prevention—a regional, injury-data-and-prevention
leader—strives to save lives, prevent injury, improve quality of life and reduce
injury-related costs. The Center was established in 1999 as a resource for
injury prevention information, research and programming. Programs are initiated
through the Mecklenburg Safe Communities Program, a coalition of more than 40
members representing more than 30 organizations and individuals.
