Because a child responds differently from an adult. . . children
with critical injuries often require specialized care beyond the resources of
general hospitals. This care may include pediatric and surgical
specialists and a hospital with an around-the-clock commitment to advanced
pediatric trauma care, fully prepared to support a traumatized family. After
discharge, children need physical, emotional and educational rehabilitation for
full recovery.
The Hemby Pediatric Trauma Institute provides for all of these needs
around-the-clock, without concern for ability to pay.
The five essential components of comprehensive pediatric trauma
care include:
Prehospital Care
Our goal: Maintain a regional network of physicians,
nurses, emergency medical technicians and paramedics skilled in immediate
response to pediatric trauma. It’s why we offer--in cooperation with local EMS
systems, physicians and hospitals-- training opportunities ranging from
introductory lectures to in-service courses in pediatric trauma.
Hospital Care
Physicians, nurses, the Emergency Department, surgical
suites and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit are always on alert, prepared for
pediatric trauma patients. Our preparedness includes a specialized,
interdisciplinary pediatric trauma response team, with the support of CMC’s
Level One trauma center, at the ready.
Rehabilitation
Psychological and social problems can be as devastating as
physical injury. Rehabilitation specialists begin to plan for this phase of
recovery soon after a child’s arrival. Returning the child home, fully
recovered, as quickly as possible is the goal of each specially tailored
rehabilitation.
Injury
Prevention
Though injury remains a major public health problem,
education and support offers tremendous potential for improvement. The Hemby
Pediatric Trauma Institute provides many programs to promote injury prevention.
Prevention is our best opportunity to reduce the frequency and severity of child
injuries.
Research
Research is a vital component in assuring
improved injury control and treatment for pediatric trauma victims.
State-of-the-art research is underway to engender advances in therapeutic and
prevention models.
