Technology for Diagnosis and Treatment

The CMC Department of Neurology relies on Electroneurodiagnostics.

Electroneurodiagnostics
A crucial component in the accurate diagnosis of many neurological disorders is the use of electroneurodiagnostic. This procedure involves the recording and evaluation of electrical activity in the brain and nervous system. The Department of Neurology features the most advanced electroneurodiagnostic technology available, including:

  • Electroencephalogram (EEG)
  • Evoked potential (EP)
  • Nerve conduction study (NCS)
  • Electromyelogram (EMG)

All tests are performed by experienced technicians, and results are interpreted by a physician specializing in electroneurodiagnostics. The findings provide the basis for the development of an individualized treatment plan.

Neurophysiological monitoring
Neurophysiological monitoring uses advanced computer software and equipment to assess the functional integrity of the peripheral and central nervous system during neurosurgery. This process can detect problems during surgery and alert the surgical team, who can then alter the course of the operation and reduce incidence of neurological complications.

Neurophysiological monitoring techniques include:

  • Direct nerve recording
  • Motor-evoked potentials
  • Sensory evoked potentials
  • Cortical mapping
  • WADA testing
  • Speech mapping

Stereotactic radiosurgery
Carolinas Medical Center is the only hospital in the region to offer stereotactic radiosurgery and the most advanced approach available today: Novalis® Shaped Beam Surgery.

This innovative technology allows for the effective treatment of lesions and abnormal tissue previously considered inoperable. Precise mapping of the area with CT scans, angiography, MRI and three-dimensional computer modeling, allows the abnormal tissues to be treated with finely defined radiation beams. Treatment is administered by a multidisciplinary team, including specialists in:

  • Neuroradiology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Radiation oncology
  • Radiation physics
