Pediatric Rehabilitation
The rehabilitation team works diligently with patients and family members to ensure that children who have suffered from birth defects or injuries become as functional as possible.
Pediatric Spasticity Clinic
Most children suffering from spasticity have some type of cerebral palsy and face unique challenges relative to growth and development. The Pediatric Spasticity Clinic provides a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to surgical and nonsurgical intervention for these children, and is dedicated to helping to improve their quality of life.
Rhizotomy Program
Younger children may be candidates for selective dorsal rhizotomy, a highly specialized surgical procedure designed to reduce spasticity in the lower extremities and allow greater freedom of movement. During this procedure, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring is used to assist the surgeon in interrupting abnormal neural pathways. After the surgery, each patient undergoes an intensive physical and occupational therapy program to strengthen muscles and improve mobility.
Ketogenic Diet Program
When anticonvulsant drugs prove ineffective or produce undesirable side effects in children with epilepsy, many of these children can realize improvement through dietary adjustments. The Ketogenic Diet Program started at Johns Hopkins. Currently, our team of specialists is the only group in the region that is fully trained on the diet's standards and practices.
Pediatric Oncology of the Brain and Spinal Cord
Children with tumors of the brain or spinal cord receive specialized care with a personal touch from the Blumenthal Cancer Center's multidisciplinary pediatric oncology team. Our team participates in national pediatric oncology research programs, allowing patients early access to the latest protocols. Support groups and pediatric neuropsychologists are also available to help families cope with the effects of a child's illness.
